The Hidden Meaning Behind Meghan Markle’s Birthday Necklace

It’s no secret to royal followers that jewelry is more than a mere adornment. From Queen Elizabeth’s brooches to Kate Middleton’s necklaces, royal attire is distinct and deliberate—especially when it comes to accessories. Whether they’re nodding to the past or setting forth new sentimentalities, a deep dive into the meaning behind royal jewelry renders many a fascinating backstory. That’s why, when Meghan Markle appeared in a video for her birthday, her layered necklaces were quick to catch our eye.

In celebration of her 40th birthday, the Duchess of Sussex announced that she’s launching a new charitable initiative, entitled 40×40. For the project, she recruited actress Melissa McCarthy to join her on a video call to help spread the word (and provide a few laughs along the way); McCarthy made two outfit changes, the Duchess sipped tea from a gorgeous ceramic cup, Prince Harry juggled in the background, and, above all, they made their call-to-action clear.

The duchess, phoning in from an office in her Montecito home, wore a calming blend of neutrals, including an ivory sweater, white tank top, lounge pants, and brown suede Manolo Blahnik pumps. She completed the look with two delicate astrology-themed necklaces from the Los Angeles-based jewelry brand Logan Hollowell. Both necklaces feature constellations—one of Taurus, and one of Gemini—made of 14k gold and diamond. The pieces are a sweet-yet-subtle tribute to her two children: a Taurus necklace for Archie’s star sign, and a Gemini necklace for Lilibet.

While our eyes were surely on the duchess’s ensemble, we were all ears when it came to her new initiative. With 40×40, Meghan is looking to support women around the world who have been affected by the pandemic by calling on 40 bold-faced celebrities—from Adele to José Andrés—to dedicate 40 minutes of their time to mentoring these individuals as they reenter the workforce. “With my 40th lap around the sun in mind, it made me wonder: what would happen if we all committed 40 minutes to helping someone else or to mentoring someone in need?” the Duchess of Sussex wrote in a personal statement, which she posted on her and Prince Harry’s foundation website. “And then what would happen if we asked our friends to do the same?”
